The short answer
Start with Phrom Phong: Benjasiri Park, two big malls and international hospitals are close by, and many families already live there. Thong Lo and Silom–Sathorn also work well. Before anything else, find the school — the school run decides more than the area does. Family apartments with two or three bedrooms cost more than the one-bedroom rents shown here.

Parks, malls, a hospital close by

Why it works: Benjasiri Park and two big malls are by the station, international hospitals are close, and many expat families already live here.
Watch out: Some of the highest rents on Sukhumvit, and the main road is busy.
Check the school run first

Why it works: Larger apartments on quieter sois, and international hospitals nearby.
Watch out: Long sois — check how far the building is from the station and from the school.

Why it works: Lumpini Park is right there, and international hospitals are nearby.
Watch out: High rents, and the school run can be long if the school is on Sukhumvit.
Fine for some, hard for others

Watch out: Busy and loud, with little space for kids to play nearby.

Questions
The school. In Bangkok traffic, a long school run can take hours out of every day. Choose the school, then the area near it.
Many families start in a large condo with a pool and a playground, then move to a house later if they need more space. I can show you both.
Ari is a lovely place to live, but most of the big international schools are on the Sukhumvit side of the city, so the school run from Ari is long.
